Cabo Airport Arrival and Departure Tips
Los Cabos Airport, officially San José del Cabo International Airport (SJD), serves millions of travelers annually. While the airport is generally easy to navigate, a few practical tips can help ease your arrival and departure. Here’s how to make the most of your time at Los Cabos Airport.
What to Expect When You Arrive
When you land at Los Cabos Airport, prepare for a warm welcome! After deplaning either Terminal 1 (Domestic flights or Terminal 2 & 3 International flights), you’ll walk through the terminal towards immigration. This process usually moves quickly, but lines can get long during peak times. Stay patient, and have your passport and necessary international arrival customs form ready. If you haven’t already filled out your customs forms, that’s next.
Once you clear immigration, you’ll move on to baggage claim. It’s marked, so finding your luggage is straightforward. After grabbing your bags, head to customs. A customs agent will review your forms and ask basic questions about your visit. After this, you’ll be set to exit and start your adventure in Cabo!
Tips for Getting Through Mexican Customs Quickly
- Complete Your Paperwork in Advance: The crew will hand out a customs form on the flight. Fill it out carefully to save time when you land.
- Mexican Customs have very specific “import vs. vacation rules for iPads,” and if you have too many per person, you could be subject to a tax in Customs!
- Stay Organized: Keep your passport, ID, and customs form within reach. Quick access means a quicker process.
- Follow the Green Light, Red Light System: At customs, you may need to press a button for a randomized result of “green” or “red.” A green light means you can go without further inspection, while a red one means agents will scan and then hand-check your bags. Just follow instructions, and you’ll be through in no time.
- VIP Service: The current Mexican Customs administration at SJD does not allow guided or escorted fast track. Assistance from your airline is available for those needing ADA or other assistance. But you can’t skip the line or hand off your luggage to others.
Transportation Options from the Airport
- Shuttles: Airport shuttles offer an affordable way to reach most hotels and resorts in Cabo. Check for shuttle services in advance, as some require reservations.
- Taxis: Taxis may be available, but rates depend on the time of day and the time of year. Always ask for the rate before you hop in to avoid surprises.
- Rental Cars: If you prefer to explore on your schedule, rental car companies operate on-site at Los Cabos Airport. Book in advance during peak seasons for the best rates.
- Private Transfers: For a more personalized experience, book a private transfer in advance. Companies offer luxury vehicles with English-speaking drivers, which can make your trip even more comfortable.
What to Know Before Departing from Los Cabos
When it’s time to return, you’ll want to arrive at Los Cabos Airport early, typically 3 hours before an international flight and at least 2 hours before a domestic flight. Airlines’ check-in counters for ticketing, passport verification, and bag drop can get long, especially for international flights, so give yourself plenty of time to check-in. Remember, you’ll also need to clear immigration and then go through security.
- Check Flight Times: Confirm your flight time in advance since delays or schedule changes can happen.
- Approved Items: Know what is and is not permitted in carry-on luggage. Most airline counters will have displays with pictures of approved and prohibited items for carry-on luggage through Los Cabos Airport security. (see above)
- Be Aware of Security Rules: Los Cabos Airport follows strict security regulations. Like at most airports, remove laptops and liquids from your bags to speed things up.
Tips for Avoiding Airport Stress
- Arrive Early: Aim to reach the airport three hours before your flight. You’ll have time for any surprises, whether long lines or last-minute paperwork.
- Stay Hydrated and Relaxed: Hydrate and relax! Most terminals have restaurants and coffee shops where you can grab refreshments.
- Prepare for Currency Exchange Needs: If you need pesos, exchange them before you arrive at the airport. Rates are often better outside.
- iPads, Computers & Customs: When visiting or leaving Cabo, know the customs rules regarding the number of electronic devices allowed at entry and departure per person.
